Evasion sentence welcomed by Inland Revenue
10 December 2004

The Tauranga District Court today handed down its second sentence for tax evasion in the same week. Anna Zigova was this morning sentenced to four months imprisonment, for one charge of evading tax.

"Two cases of this type in the same week really hits the message home," said Service Centre Manager Kevin Moody. "This shows very clearly that people who deliberately evade taxes will be caught and will be punished. It's a crime that the Courts take seriously."

Zigova had used a false identity to issue over $110,000 worth of invoices, evading tax of $33,150. Today's sentencing closely follows the sentencing of Davinder Singh to 12 months imprisonment on Tuesday this week.

"Tax evasion is stealing from the community. It disadvantages honest businesses by essentially undercutting them. We are working to level the playing field by taking a tough approach with those who refuse to comply with the law."

Through its Industry Partnership initiative, Inland Revenue continues to work closely with the horticultural industry to tackle deliberate evasion and make it easier for people to meet their obligations through education and advice.

"We urge anyone who is concerned their tax affairs may not be in order to contact us straight away. If people contact us voluntarily, any penalties for unpaid tax are greatly reduced and we will work with them to manage their situation," said Mr Moody.

People with any concerns about tax can contact Inland Revenue by phoning 0800 377 771 (business customers) or 0800 227 771 (personal customers), or by visiting their local office.
