Are you eligible for a childcare rebate?
29 March 2005

With the tax season for 2005 about to get underway, Inland Revenue is is reminding parents that they of may be able to claim a rebate for childcare costs and school fees.

You may apply for a rebate if you earned a taxable income (e.g. salary, wages, benefit, self-employed income) between 1 April 2004 and 31 March 2005 and did any of the following:

  • you paid for childcare as a working parent
  • you paid school fees
  • you paid for a housekeeper, where you or your partner were disabled or physically unable to do housework
  • you donated $5 or more to a charitable organisation.

"During April, we will automatically send rebate claim forms to people who claimed a rebate last year for donations, childcare or housekeeper rebates," says Colin MacDonald, Deputy Commissioner Business Development and Systems.

"Remember to attach receipts to the claim form, as we're unable to process your rebate without receipts."

People who haven't received a rebate claim form by the end of April can request one by visiting www.ird.govt.nz , or by ringing our automated stationery line on 0800 257 773. (Remember to have your IRD number handy.)

For more information about tax rebates, visit www.ird.govt.nz . Our website has recently been redesigned and is now more user-friendly than ever. As well as checking out the site's information, forms and stationery, viewers can also calculate their tax and refunds online .
