It's IR 3 time - for many of us
21 May 2007

Inland Revenue is reminding people who receive income from self-employment, rental properties, partnerships or withholding payments that they may need to file an IR 3 tax return.

Over the past two months, Inland Revenue has sent more than 420,000 IR 3 tax packs to New Zealanders who receive income from sources other than salaries or wages.

Taxpayers need to file their IR 3 tax returns by 7 July 2007, unless they have an extension of time arrangement through a tax agent.

"If you can't file your return by 7 July, and you don't have a tax agent with an extension of time, please call us - we may be able to give you more time to file your return," says Colin MacDonald, Deputy Commissioner, Service Delivery.

"Likewise, if your circumstances have changed and you no longer need to file an IR 3, please call us on 0800 377 774 so we can update your records," he adds.

People who haven't received an IR 3 taxpack yet, or aren't sure if they need one, can visit www.ird.govt.nz. Inland Revenue's website offers secure channels for taxpayers to request forms, calculate tax and file tax returns online.  Alternatively, they can call their automated telephone service on 0800 257 773 to request an IR 3 taxpack.
