Inland Revenue reassures people affected by weather
11 July 2007

Inland Revenue has set up a special emergency hotline for people who are concerned about the impact of the North Island weather bomb on their tax obligations.

The hotline number is 0800 473 566.

"We appreciate the extreme hardships created by flood and wind damage to homes, businesses, and farms in times such as this,'' said the Commissioner of  Inland Revenue, Bob Russell.  "We aim to provide as much support and assistance as possible."

"We understand that tax won't be the first thing people think of when a disaster like this strikes, but we want them to know that they can contact us with any queries or worries they may have.''

Mr Russell said that Inland Revenue had flexibility to take account of individual circumstances when extreme events occurred. Relief could include remission of penalties arising from not filing returns or making payments on time, extensions of time for filing returns, or late re-estimation of provisional tax.  Working for Families Tax Credits, which are linked to income levels, could also be adjusted where necessary.
