Tax payments due on 7 February 2009

If you have an end of year income tax, working for families tax credits, or student loan payment to make for the 2008 tax year, the payment will be due on 7 February 2009 (unless you have an extension of time through a tax agent).

You can make payments by:

  • using internet banking
  • posting us a cheque, or
  • visiting any Westpac branch and paying by cash, cheque or EFTPOS.

Why do you owe money?

You might have an end-of-year tax bill if you are ... and you ...
working for salary or wages used the wrong tax code with one or more employers.
self-employed
  • didn't pay provisional tax (instalments of income tax during the year), or
  • did pay provisional tax but your profit was higher than anticipated.
receiving Working for Families Tax Credits received an overpayment because you:
  • underestimated your annual income, and/or
  • didn't notify us of changes to your income or family circumstances.

If you have a bill for the 2008 tax year, it will have been calculated on an Income tax return (IR3) filed by you, or on a Personal tax summary (PTS) issued by us. Refer to your IR3 return or PTS for specific information about your tax assessment.

How do you avoid getting another bill next year?

Here are a few tips for avoiding an end-of-year income tax, student loan or working for families tax credits bill.

If you ... and ... then you should ...
are a salary and wage earner you want to pay the right amount of tax across your total income use:
  • the M ("main") tax code with your largest source of income (ie your main job, if you have more than one), and
  • a secondary tax code with all other employers.
you're receiving a benefit from Work and Income and have additional employment, such as a part-time job use a secondary tax code for the additional employment, as your benefit will already be using the M code.
are self-employed you're required to pay provisional tax (instalments of income tax during the year) choose the provisional tax calculation option that best suits your situation:
have a student loan your total annual income exceeds the repayment threshold ($18,148 for the 2008-09 tax year) use a student loan tax code with your employer or employers (eg "M SL" with your main employer).
receive Working for Families tax credits you or your partner have any changes to your income or your family circumstances notify us immediately of the changes.
