Extensions on filing and paying your returns
If you think you can't file your return or make a payment by the due date, please call us on 0800 227 771 to arrange a new due date.
Filing returns
Even if you can't afford to pay us please send us the completed return. To discuss your financial situation please call us on 0800 473 566. We want to make things as easy and simple for you as possible and can discuss setting up a financial arrangement or writing the debt off.
Financial hardship
We understand it may take some time for you to be in a financial position to pay your tax. A number of options are available for paying overdue tax, such as an instalment arrangement. In some circumstances we may be able to write off your debt. Please call us on 0800 227 771 to discuss your options.
If you have a student loan
If you've been directly affected by the Christchurch earthquake and are experiencing hardship in meeting your repayments, call us on our disaster helpline 0800 473 566. We'll take a realistic approach and work with you to sort things out.
If you're currently receiving Student Allowance, Student Loan, Unemployment Benefit Student Hardship or scholarship payments you will continue to receive your payments as scheduled. If you're not yet receiving payments but have received an approval letter for your Student Allowance or Loan Entitlement Advice, you will receive your payments as per the letter you have received.

If your records are destroyed
If your business records have been destroyed and you can't file your returns please call us on 0800 227 771 to discuss how we can help you.
Late payment penalties
Please contact us on 0800 473 566 about any expected delays in filing or paying, we'll make a note on your file and give you time to reconstruct your records or make payment (if applicable).
When your accounts have been reconstructed, your returns filed, and the amount showing on the return is paid, we can reverse any late filing penalties, late payment penalties and use-of-money interest. You can let us know by sending us a secure email using our secure online services or call us on 0800 473 566.
Paying tax and filing returns
