About this form

Use this form to voluntarily elect to change the method of calculating foreign investment fund (FIF) income or loss. You can only complete this election if you are a New Zealand resident.

When to use this form

These are the only circumstances in which you can voluntarily change the method of calculating FIF income or loss from your FIF interest.

  • You are changing to the branch equivalent method for the first time for any interest held in the FIF (unless Inland Revenue has permitted a change on more than one occasion because a change in factual circumstances meant that you could not obtain sufficient information to use the branch equivalent method).
  • You are changing from the branch equivalent method for the first time for any interest held in the FIF (unless Inland Revenue has permitted a change on more than one occasion because a change in factual circumstances meant that you could not obtain sufficient information to use the branch equivalent method) and the change is back to the calculation method used immediately before using the branch equivalent method.
  • You are a natural person and the market value of your FIF interests does not exceed NZ$250,000 at the end of the:
    • income year preceding the income year at the end of which the change is to apply where you are electing to change to the comparative value or deemed rate of return methods, or
    • accounting period preceding the accounting period at the end of which the change is to apply where you are electing to change to the accounting profits or branch equivalent methods.
