Sorting out your overdue child support payment
A transcript of the 'Sorting out your overdue child support payment' video

Visual:

Inland Revenue’s logo appears, together with the title of the video “Child Support”. This fades to white.

Visual:

We see a man’s hand holding a pen. The hand starts drawing a cartoon. The hand draws a cloud with the word “DEBT” inside, then the axis of a graph. Starting on one side of the graph, rising above the cloud, it draws a stair-step graph-line going up and ending in an arrow.

Audio:

“Are you behind with your child support payments?

Are the penalties pushing your debt higher and higher?”

Visual:

The hand draws a circle with a smiling male IR person wearing a telephone headset. Below him, the hand draws a dotted stair-step graph-line down from the end of the rising line, and a tick-box with a green tick and the words “Write-off penalties” under the circle. The hand then draws a woman, Sally, walking up the last of the rising graph-line with an arm outstretched towards the IR person.

Audio:

“Talk to us now. If you agree to a plan to repay your debt, penalties will stop being charged. Plus we have the flexibility to write-off penalties in a wide range of situations.”

Visual:

The hand draws an arm from the IR person reaching towards the Sally‘s hand.

Audio:

“This could be the helping hand you’re looking for.”

Visual:

The camera view pans out and down until just the “DEBT” cloud shows, and the hand draws Sally looking worried and holding a letter, then it draws a text-bubble pointing at the letter with the word ‘Penalties’ inside it, and rain falling from the cloud onto Sally.

Audio:

“Let’s take a look at Sally who needs to pay child support for her son Tom.”

“Two years ago she fell behind with her payments and the penalties have increased ever since. She’s really worried.”

Visual:

The camera view pans down and the hand draws a relaxed Sally standing with her arms crossed and the same IR representative in a circle with the phone number 0800 221 221 above it. Underneath the circle, the hand writes the words “More flexibility to write-off penalties” and a box with a green tick inside it.

Audio:

“Sally contacts us to talk.”

“We discuss a repayment plan that’s manageable for her, and she agrees to it. We can then consider writing off some of her penalties straight away.”

Visual:

The hand re-draws Sally’s and the IR person’s hands shaking over a letter the woman is holding, then the camera view zooms out before the hand draws an arrow with a $ sign from the letter to an IR logo. The hand then draws another arrow with a $ sign from Sally‘s other side to the IR logo, and at Sally‘s end of the arrow writes “Usual child support”. The hand then draws a letter below the second arrow with the words “Overdue” and “Penalties charged” on.

Audio:

“Sally will pay off the child support she owes over time, while she continues to pay her usual monthly amount. But she needs to keep to the agreed arrangement or penalties will start again.”

Visual:

The camera view pans down and the hand draws a signboard with an IR Child Support logo and a tick-box with a green tick and writes “Pay on time”. It then draws Sally leaning on the left-hand end then another tick-box with a green tick and the words “No penalties” below the first one. Then the hand draws a teenage boy, Tom, to the right of the signboard before drawing onto the signboard below the second text line a third tick-box with a green tick and the words “Pay direct from your wages”.

Audio:

“The key is to always pay on time. Then Sally won’t be charged penalties and she can be happy she has provided for Tom.”

“And if you’re a liable parent you can call us to ask to pay your child support directly from your wages.”

Visual:

The camera view pans down and the hand writes a phone number (0800 221 221) and then draws a computer screen showing the myIR logo, with Sally on a phone leaning on the screen from behind. It then writes the web address “www.ird.govt.nz/childsupport” under the phone number.

Audio:

“We can help you. Call us or send a secure mail through myIR. You can find out more about child support on our website.”
