Don't know what an IRD Number is? Need to know how much tax you will pay on your New Zealand income? Having problems meeting your tax obligations? Here you will find answers to these and other common questions people ask us.
Get an IRD number

You need an IRD number if you deal with IRD. Individuals (including children) need an IRD number if they are earning income. Children need an IRD number so you can claim family assistance. Organisations, including businesses, companies, trusts and societies also require a IRD number. Learn how to apply here.

Tax rates and codes

Different tax rates apply to different entities such as individuals and companies. These rates can also change if legislation changes.

Make payments to Inland Revenue

If you have tax to pay we want to make it as easy as possible for you to do so. This section gives you some guidelines to help us process your payments quickly and efficiently. You can pay us electronically, by post, in person or, by debit or credit card (currently only available to student loan borrowers and parents paying child support) or from overseas.

Change your address

It is important that we hold your correct details so we can provide you with the information you require. The Government page on the NZ Post Ltd Change My Address website enables you to notify us when you change your address and phone number. This service also enables you to advise a multiple number of other organisations of your change of address at the same time. Using Change my Address is simple.

Managing financial difficulty and debt

If you think you will have difficulty meeting any of your tax obligations it is important that you contact us to discuss your situation as penalties may apply if you do not pay on time.

Convert overseas currencies

We publish different exchange rates for different purposes. This page will explain what they are and which one to use.

Raise a dispute or complaint

At Inland Revenue we are committed to good service. If you are unhappy with the service you received please tell us about it so we can try to resolve any issues and improve our service. If you disagree with how we've assessed your tax or child support, you may need to follow a formal disputes procedure.

Have someone act on your behalf

You can authorise another person to act with us on your behalf, to help you with your tax affairs (There's one exception: child support customers must authorise us in writing to release information from their child support records. An authorised person can discuss your child support affairs, but cannot authorise forms or take other actions on your behalf.)

Audits

We encourage people to work within the tax laws by carrying out business audits. An audit is basically a check of tax and business records to make sure you've paid the correct amount of tax. The audit can cover income tax, GST and employer returns. After an audit you may be entitled to a refund or you may have tax to pay.
