Make payments to Inland Revenue: Overseas payments

Common questions on what to do if you make a mistake in payment

What if I enter the wrong IRD number?
We recommend you check your details carefully. You can edit your details up until the time you hit the "submit" button on the debit and credit card details page. If you do continue with the wrong IRD number you should contact us.

Can I cancel a payment once it is completed?
No. If you make a mistake with the payment you should contact us.

What should I do if I accidentally pay too much?
You will need to contact us. We will check your Inland Revenue account and when we have verified the overpayment we will direct credit the amount to your nominated bank account or send you a cheque.

Please note: If your transaction was made before 10.30pm we can only confirm the payment into your Inland Revenue account on the following business day. Transactions after 10.30pm can only be confirmed after two business days.

Will you refund to my debit or credit card?
No. We don't collect your debit or credit card information as the payment facility is provided by our bank, Westpac New Zealand Ltd. We will only refund any accidental overpayment to the person whose IRD number was entered by direct crediting it to the nominated bank account or by sending a cheque.

Will any fees be refunded?
The convenience fee is charged by Westpac New Zealand Ltd (their website is found under the related websites section of our site) and is not refundable. Inland Revenue receives no part of it.

Any other fees charged under the terms of your cardholder arrangement are between you and your card issuer.
