Work out your tax code

Your tax code if you are receiving a benefit

If you ... then ...

receive, or are you about to receive a benefit (other than New Zealand Superannuation)

the tax code that applies to your benefit is M.

Write M in the circle under question 2 of the Tax code declaration (IR330) form, then give the completed form to your employer. Make sure you complete questions 1-4 of the IR330.

You can download an IR330 here or complete it online - go to "Forms and guides".

are working as well as receiving as benefit

you can use a special tax code or a secondary code for your other income.

Example

James is 23 and receives an unemployment benefit. He begins a part-time job earning $130 a week, which reduces his benefit to $118.46 a week.

James is completing an IR330 for his part-time job and can either choose to apply for a special tax code or use a secondary tax code. His benefit income will have tax code M.
