About the application process

There are several steps in applying to be a listed research provider (LRP).

The following table describes the LRP application process.

Stage Description
1. You complete and submit the application form online.
2. We assess your application.
3. We may request further information to support your application.
4. You provide any information that we request.
5. We notify you of our decision.

If your application is ...

then ...

successful

  • you will be notified by email, and
  • we will list you as an LRP on the our website.

unsuccessful

  • you will be notified by letter, and
  • you may reapply to become an LRP when the reason for the non-acceptance has been addressed.

What you need to know to apply

To apply online to be an LRP, you must have the following information:

  • your business and contact details
  • your business IRD number
  • the categories of research service you provide.

You may be asked to support your application with proof that you meet the LRP criteria. If so, we will contact you requesting more details.

Once you have been listed, you may request to update your details or request to be removed at any time, by contacting us online, by phone or by letter.

What are the categories of research services?

The R&D categories are:

  • Animal production and animal primary products
  • Commercial services and tourism
  • Construction
  • Cultural understanding
  • Defence
  • Economic framework
  • Education and training
  • Energy
  • Environment
  • Expanding knowledge
  • Health
  • Information and communication services
  • Law, politics and community services
  • Manufacturing
  • Mineral resources (excluding energy resources)
  • Plant production and plant primary products
  • Transport.
Important

These categories are the Australian and New Zealand Standard Research Classifications (ANZSRC), and not all categories of research in this classification will necessarily be eligible for the R&D tax credit.

Categories have been standardised between New Zealand and Australia. For further information about these categories, see Australia New Zealand Standard Research Classification (ANZSRC) definitions.

You may:

  • update your research categories at any time, and
  • provide research services in more than one area.

You can apply online to be listed on our website as a research provider.
