Businesses affected by mine closure

We understand that many businesses will be affected by the Pike River mine disaster. Here is some information that may help you over this time.

If you'd like to speak to us please call one of our 0800 numbers under contact us or come into our Greymouth Office at Blanchfield House, Guinness Street, Greymouth, or you can go to the Greymouth Community Link in Mackay Street.

Provisional tax estimates/re-estimates

You may be able to make an estimate or re-estimate of your provisional tax if your income has changed due to the closure of the Pike River mine. We can arrange early refunds if provisional tax has been overpaid.

Late filing and late payment penalties

If you've been unable to file returns on time it's important to contact us and discuss your options. Extensions can't be granted for GST and PAYE returns, but any penalties for late filing may be waived. If you receive a letter about an overdue return it's important you contact us or your tax agent.

Outstanding tax

We'll consider instalments for outstanding tax in some circumstances. You can apply for a write-off due to serious hardship when you know you won't be able to pay the full amount.

Note

If we grant relief from payment due to hardship and you have losses to carry forward, these losses will be reduced in proportion to the amount written off.

Redundancy tax credit

If you have to make any of your employees redundant there is a redundancy tax credit that's available to your employees if they make the claim before 1 April 2011.

They'll need to complete a Redundancy tax credit (IR524) form. The redundancy tax credit is paid at the rate of 6 cents in the dollar to a maximum of $3,600 for each redundancy payment.

Working for Families Tax Credits

If you have a child or children you may be entitled to Working for Families Tax Credits (WfFTC). You can apply for WfFTC on the Working for Families' website.

WfFTC is based on your yearly income. If you already receive WfFTC your entitlements may change. You can re-estimate your yearly income at at "Secure online services" (go to the top right side of this page) or by calling us or your tax agent

Child support

You may have concerns or questions about your continuing entitlements or you may have trouble making child support payments by the due dates. Please call us on 0800 221 221 so we can help you.
