How to make a repayment

Find out how you can make your student loan repayments.

There are a number of ways you can make your student loan repayments:

If you're repaying overdue amounts

Make sure you specify the tax year the repayment is for. Otherwise, we'll apply the repayment to the current tax year.

Debit or credit card repayment

We accept both MasterCard and Visa. To make a repayment go to "Debit and credit card payments for child support and student loans" under "Get it done online".

Online banking

Most banks offer online tax payment services which you can use to pay your student loan; ANZ, ASB, BankDirect, Bank of New Zealand, Kiwibank, The National Bank, New Zealand Home Loans, OrbitRemit, Sovereign Home Loans, TSB and Westpac. For other banks, you'll need to do the following:

  • in the payee name and bank panels, enter "Inland Revenue" and our account number 03 0049 0001100 27. These details stay the same every time.
ASB customers only: you'll need to enter three digits in the account suffix number, use 027
  • in the particulars panel, enter your IRD number.
  • in the payee code panel, enter SLS. Leave the next box blank, then enter the tax year this repayment is for, not the date you're making the repayment. This must follow the format DD/MM/YYYY.
  • leave the reference panel blank.

Automatic payment

Some banks offer this service online. If not, you'll need to complete an Automatic payment authority (IR586) form and give it to your bank. Enter the following:

  • in the Tax type box enter "SLS", and
  • in the Tax year box enter the tax year you want the repayment applied to.

In person at Westpac

You can make a repayment by cash, cheque or EFTPOS at any branch of Westpac, using a repayment slip (attached to the bottom of your statement or available through Westpac branches). If you use a tax slip from Westpac, enter the following:

  • in the Tax type box enter "SLS", and
  • in the Period ended box enter the tax year you want the payment applied to.

Sending us a cheque in New Zealand

You need to include a note advising the repayment is for your student loan and the tax year the repayment applies to. You also need to include your name, address and IRD number. Post the cheque to:

Inland Revenue
PO Box 39050
Wellington

Please do not send us cash. Cash payments can only be made at Westpac.

Telegraphic transfer

Telegraphic transfers allow you to send money to us from an overseas bank. However, there's often a fee involved from the sending and receiving banks, and it does take a couple of days to process your repayment.

Each bank has their own unique telegraphic transfer form that you'll need to complete to make a repayment. You can use the Telegraphic transfer form (see "Forms and guides") to help you fill it in.

Make sure you include your IRD number, tax type (SLS) and tax period it's for in the payment section.

Foreign bank draft or personal cheque

Our bank will accept a cheque or bank draft in the currencies listed in the table below. We'll credit the payment to your student loan account in New Zealand dollars, using the exchange rate on the day we bank the cheque.

For personal foreign cheques, the repayment must be in the same currency that the cheque is drawn in. We can't process the cheque if it's in New Zealand dollars but the bank account is in another currency.

Accepted foreign currencies
United States dollar USD   Pakistan rupee PKR
Pound sterling GBP   Soloman Islands dollar SBD
Australian dollar AUD   Swedish krona SEK
Canadian dollar CAD   Singapore dollar SGD

Danish krone DKK   Tongan pa'anga TOP
Fijian dollar FJD   Vanuatu vatu VUV
Hong Kong dollar HKD   CFP franc XPF
Japanese yen JPY   South African rand ZAR

This list is subject to change and is for the currencies accepted by our bankers. For other currencies, you'll need to make a telegraphic transfer.

Foreign postal or money orders

We can accept foreign postal orders or money orders as long as there aren't restrictions about where they can be redeemed. For example, some foreign postal orders state that they can only be redeemed in the country of purchase. In this case you'll need to make your repayment by another option.

Sending us a foreign bank draft, personal foreign cheque, foreign postal or money order

You'll need to include a note advising the payment is for your student loan and the tax year the payment applies to. You'll also need to include your name, address and IRD number.

Send your payment to:

PO Box 3754
Christchurch Mail Centre
