About this return

Use this form to file your tax return if you were a non-resident for the full year but have earned income from New Zealand sources.

Adobe Acrobat PDF | 401kb | 6 pages

This form can be completed on-screen by typing content directly into the PDF document. Once you have completed the form it is important that you print it out as you will not be able to save the information you enter into the form.

When to use this return

Fill in an IR3NR if you were a non-resident for the full year and you received income from New Zealand, such as:

  • interest, dividends or royalties
  • rents
  • self-employment
  •  salary or wages earned while personally present in New Zealand
  • directors’ fees for services performed in New Zealand
  • income from an estate, trust or partnership
  • superannuation for past services in New Zealand (this may be exempt if subject to a double taxation agreement).

You probably won’t have to fill in a return if your only income is from interest, dividends or royalties, and non-resident withholding tax was deducted at the correct rate.

What you will need

You will need:

  • your IRD number
  • your personal contact details
  • details of any New Zealand interest paid or credited to you
  • any New Zealand dividends paid or credited to you

  • any New Zealand estate or trust income
  • any New Zealand rents, self-employment income or other income
  • any expenses against your income
  • any net losses brought forward
