New deadline for rebate claims proposed
The Government has announced that the six month deadline for applications for rebates on charitable donations and payments for housekeeping and childcare is to be removed.
Currently the legislation requires claims to be made by the following 30 September for anyone with a 31 March or early balance date (or six months after balance date for anyone who has a late balance date).
The effect of the proposed change will mean people will have up to eight years to file their claims. This is the same period that applies to refunds for overpaid tax.
Rebate claims for 1999-2000
The proposed legislation will mean that further rebate claims will be able to be made in relation to the 1999-2000 income year.
As a result, people who missed out on claiming their rebates, or were declined, can now submit claims. We will hold these claims for processing until the legislation is amended.
Rebate claims for 2000-2001
If the legislation has not been amended by 30 September, any 2000-2001 income year claims received after that date for taxpayers with a 31 March or early balance date will also be held. They will be processed once the legislation is amended.
We will advise you when the new legislation has been passed in our "breaking news" email facility. Further information will also be published in AGENTSanswers, these are available under the Newsletters and Bulletins section of our website.
