Get ready to apply

Use the checklist below to find out what details you need to apply for Working for Families Tax Credits.

What you need to know

  • when and how you want to get paid
  • your bank account number or your building society details
  • your IRD number
  • the amount of income before tax you expect to receive for the whole tax year (from 1 April to 31 March the following year)

    Note

    The amount of income before tax may show as "gross income" on your payslip.

  • your spouse's or partner's full name, their IRD number and the amount of income before tax they expect to receive for the whole tax year (from 1 April to 31 March the following year), if applicable
  • your and your spouse's or partner's working hours - we need this to calculate whether you qualify for in-work tax credit and/or minimum family tax credit
  • the following details for each child in your care:
    • full name
    • date of birth
    • date the child started living with you (if different from date of birth)
    • the child's IRD number.

What you need to do

The table below lists situations that may apply to you and explains what you need to do.

Situation What you need to do

No IRD number for your child

Complete an IR595 - IRD number application - individual for any child in your care without an IRD number.


Note

If you have to wait for that child's birth certificate before sending in the application for an IRD number, send in your Working for Families Tax Credits registration form anyway. We will pay you for this child for eight weeks without an IRD number. After this, we will stop payment until we receive an IRD number.

Born outside NZ or no NZ citizenship

If you meet the residence requirements for Working for Families Tax Credits but you:

  • weren't born in New Zealand, or
  • don't have New Zealand citizenship,

send us a copy of your and/or your children's residence permit or returning visa.

Self-employed

If you and/or your partner are self-employed, send us evidence to support your income estimate. It can be either:

  • a copy of the annual accounts of the business for the previous year
  • a set of budgeted accounts of the business for the current year, or
  • a return filed for the previous tax year.

More than six children

If you have more than six children, complete a More than six children (IR835) form.

Shared care

If you share the care of any of your children, complete a Shared care details (IR836) form.

Claiming for the previous year

If you would like to claim Working for Families Tax Credits for the previous year and your details are different from the current year, complete a Family details (IR837) form.

What you also need

You need a printer if you want to:

  • apply online, because you will need to print out the form after you have submitted it
  • use the Working for Families Tax Credits registration (FS1) form available under "Forms and guides".
