Working for families tax credits
Formerly family assistance

Contact us about a change in your family or income

During the year we continue to pay you according to the information we hold, unless you tell us otherwise. It is very important that you contact us about any change of family or income circumstances immediately so that we can work out your new entitlement.

How you can contact us

If you have to tell us about a change in your income or family circumstances, you can:

Use My family details and income online service

You can use the My family details and income online service to update your family and income details. These changes are updated immediately, unless we need to clarify something with you. You can change:

  • your details, working hours and income
  • your partner's details, working hours and income
  • your children's details
  • the bank account number for your Working for Families Tax Credits, and
  • the frequency of the payments you receive.
Note

You need to register for a user ID and password first, before you can use the My family details and income online service. Only the principal child carer can access this service - not both partners.

Email us

Send us an email if you use our secure Send and receive mail service (listed under "Get it done online"). Explain what has changed and give us the correct information.

Note

You need to register for a user ID and password before you can use Send and receive mail.

Call us

Call us on 0800 227 773. You can call us:

  • Monday to Friday from 8am to 8pm, and
  • Saturday from 9am to 1pm.
Important

If you want to change your payment option, or your bank or building society account, see Change when and how you get paid.

Why you need to contact us

We need to know about any change of your family or income circumstances because we use this information to calculate your payments. Any delay in updating your information may mean that you are:

  • overpaid and will have to pay us back after the end of the tax year (31 March), or
  • underpaid and will have to wait until after the end of the tax year (31 March) for us to pay you back any missed entitlements.
