What you're entitled to if you receive a student allowance

What it is

Student allowance is a weekly payment from StudyLink to help with your living costs while you study full-time.

What you're entitled to

If you receive a student allowance, you're entitled to family tax credit. You may also be entitled to minimum family tax credit if your annual family income (before tax) is below $24,493. You're not entitled to any other Working for Families Tax Credits.

Example

Susan and Chris are a married couple. They have two children aged 5 and 3. Chris works 25 hours a week as a teacher's aide and studies part-time. Susan studies full-time and works 10 hours a week in a gallery. She also receives a student allowance. Susan and Chris are entitled to family tax credit. They may also be entitled to minimum family tax credit if their annual family income (before tax) is below $24,493.
