What happens at the end of the tax year (31 March)
At the end of the tax year (31 March) you should check your tax position and complete your tax affairs. This helps you to find out whether:
- we hold the correct information, and
- you can expect a tax refund or have to pay a tax bill.
Do you need to file an income tax return (IR3)?
You usually don't need to file a tax return if your main income is from a salary or wage, and you:
- aren't self-employed, and
- don't have a business or rental income.
To find out if you need to file an IR3, use our online calculator Do you need to file an IR3 tax return or receive a personal tax summary? available under "Work it out".
Did you pay for childcare during the year?
If you have receipts to show that you paid for childcare during the last tax year, you can claim part of it back as a tax credit (formerly rebate).
