Starting a business: What registrations might you need to complete?

Starting a business - having an IRD number to operate the business

Your business needs an IRD number.  Please keep the number handy and tell us what it is whenever you contact us.  If you are applying for an IRD number, we will send you one within 8-10 working days of receiving the application form.

Business IRD number (partnership, company, non-profit organisation, trust/estate)

Your business must have its own IRD number if it is a partnership, company, non-profit organisation or trust/estate. Apply by filling in an IRD number application - non-individual.

Note: New companies can apply for an IRD number online at the same time as they register a company for incorporation. The service is available online through the NZ Companies Office.

If it is a partnership, each partner in a partnership also needs a personal IRD number.

Personal IRD number (sole trader, partner)

You need a personal IRD number as:

  • a sole trader
  • a partner in a partnership.

If you don't have one already, fill in an IRD number application - individual.
