For non-residents & visitors: Student loan borrowers
Travelling or overseas-based student loan borrowers
The rules that determine which repayment regime applies to student loan borrowers changed on 1 April 2007.
- If you are not eligible for an interest-free student loan, you are considered to be an overseas-based borrower and need to repay your loan according to the repayment obligations for overseas-based borrowers.
- If you are eligible for an interest-free student loan, you are considered to be a New Zealand-based borrower and need to repay your loan based on whether you earn a salary or wage, or are self-employed.
You are considered to be an overseas-based borrower if you have been overseas for 184 or more consecutive days (about six months).
If you are an overseas-based borrower, you may be entitled to a repayment holiday of up to three years. See "Find out more" below, for details on the repayment holiday.
If you're not entitled to a repayment holiday, you will need to make repayments from overseas. See "Find out more" below, for details on how to make repayments as an overseas-based borrower.
