Number of KiwiSaver closed accounts each month 

This graph shows the number of members at the end of each month who have closed their account and withdrawn their savings due to:

  • retirement
  • permanent emigration
  • death
  • serious illness.

In November 2019:

  • 248.2 thousand members have closed their accounts, up from 219.2 thousand in November 2018.
  • 26.2 thousand members have closed their accounts due to death, up from 22.9 thousand in November 2018.
  • 22.5 thousand members have closed their accounts due to permanent emigration, up from 20.9 thousand in November 2018.
  • 157.3 thousand members have closed their accounts due to retirement, up from 136.7 thousand in November 2018.
  • 11,420 members have closed their accounts due to serious illness, up from 9,790 in November 2018.

As at June 2019:

  • 237 thousand members have closed their accounts, up from 14 thousand in June 2010.
  • 25 thousand members have closed their accounts due to death, up from 2 thousand in June 2010.
  • 22 thousand members have closed their accounts due to permanent emigration up from 1 thousand in June 2010.
  • 150 thousand members have closed their accounts due to retirement; no member was in this category in 2010 FY.
  • 11 members have closed their accounts due to serious illness, up from 400 in 2010.
