Apply for an IRD number if you live in New Zealand and are not a new arrival

Back

Use this process to apply for an IRD number if you:

  • live in New Zealand and are a New Zealand citizen
  • are not a 'new arrival' to New Zealand, as advised by Immigration NZ, but do not have residency.

Gather your documents

You need one of these:

  • New Zealand passport
  • full New Zealand birth certificate issued after 1 January 1998
  • New Zealand citizenship certificate
  • New Zealand firearms or dealer licence.

You also need one of these:

  • New Zealand driver licence
  • New Zealand 18+ card
  • New Zealand student photo ID.

If you’ve changed your name you also need a document proving your name change, like a:

  • marriage or civil union certificate
  • name change certificate.

If you are applying for an IRD number for your child you also need ID for your child, such as a:

  • New Zealand passport
  • full New Zealand birth certificate issued after 1 January 1998
  • New Zealand citizenship certificate
  • New Zealand student photo ID.

If your documents do not show your relationship with your child you’ll also need a document such as:

  • adoption papers
  • parenting orders
  • guardianship orders
  • Statutory declaration IR595D form.

Get your documents verified

Take your documents to an AA driver licensing agent. They will verify your documents.
