Over the weekend of 8 - 9 October, we’re updating our external authentication system. From 10 October you’ll see changes to the myIR login page and other screens after you log in. Our external authentication system confirms your identity when you access our external services like myIR, gateway services and our self-service phoneline.

You will not be able to use these online services from 1.00pm Saturday 8 October to 8.00am Monday 10 October. You will not lose work in draft.

Logging in after the update

If you use software that connects to IR using a gateway service, you’ll need to reauthenticate using your myIR userID and password the first time you log in after the update. Make sure you have these details ready. If you are having trouble logging in and you are sure your details are correct, then contact your software provider for assistance.

Online Services changes from Monday 10 October

From 8.00am Monday 10 October the myIR login page will have a fresh look and you’ll also notice a few other changes after you log in.

Search tab default

Instead of the ‘Favourites’ tab the ‘Search’ tab will become the default landing page. What you last searched with, for example name or IRD number, will become the default Search type.

Managing favourites

A new link within each client means you can:

  • add them to favourites
  • remove them from favourites
  • or manage favourites if your favourites list is full. 

This link reduces the number of clicks to access a client's details.

Minimum password requirements

We will have a new minimum password requirement for myIR. When you reset an existing password, or  register for a new myIR account  passwords will need to:

  • be at least of 12 characters long
  • not contain commonly used sequential combinations (like 123) or password terms
  • be different to your 10 past passwords.

If you have an existing myIR account, you will be able to continue using your current password. 

Optional two-step verification

The new external authentication system supports two-step verification. We recommend using two-step verification as this adds another layer of security for IR online services. You’ll be able to turn on two-step verification in your myIR profile. 

When you enable two-step verification a unique code is created as part of the log in process. This code can be sent to either your email address or via a third-party authenticator app
