Tax statistics

Data presented in this section show selected tax statistics over time starting from the 2001 tax year. The statistics which have been made available are listed here. The published statistics are intended to improve transparency, and to meet (within the legislative boundaries) the information needs of external users and government departments.

Update timetable

Data is updated annually. Current tables were published on 1 December 2009 and the next update is scheduled for 1 December 2010.

Notes relevant to all tables and graphs

  • Tax statistics include only data collected by Inland Revenue;
  • Statistics are chosen to meet Official Statistics System criteria and to allow robust analysis;
  • Data do not duplicate statistics separately available from other sources such as Statistics New Zealand, or The Treasury;
  • Statistics are presented in both tabular and graphical form and cover the time period from 2001. Each graph and table is downloadable;
  • Links to definitions are provided, so that each table or graph can be understood and the statistics used effectively;
  • All numbers in the tables are rounded; therefore the totals are not always consistent with the sums across the corresponding categories;
  • Revenue statistics are provided for each fiscal year ending 30 June. All other data are presented as at, or for the year ending, 31 March;
  • All statistics are correct as at 15 September of the year of publishing. Please note that some further changes in data are possible due to the nature of return filing processes.

Publishing tax statistics meets the requirements of the Tax Administration Act 1994. This tax data must be used only for statistical purposes, and no individual information is published or disclosed in any other form. Any person who had access to the unit-record data has certified that they have been shown, have read and have understood section 81 of the Tax Administration Act 1994, which relates to privacy and confidentiality. Any table or other material in this section may be reproduced and published without further licence, provided that it does not purport to be published under government authority and that acknowledgement is made of this source.
