Former Inland Revenue employee pleads guilty to corruption
10 September 2008

The Commissioner of Inland Revenue, Robert Russell, expressed deep concern after a former departmental employee pleaded guilty to corruption in the Wellington District Court today.

Alex Song, 32, a former junior investigator with the department, will reappear for sentencing on 17 October.

Mr Song is no longer employed by Inland Revenue.

The charge related to Mr Song's dealings with a customer.

"This is a matter that we take extremely seriously," said Mr Russell.

"As well as giving our full co-operation to the police enquiry, we are conducting our own investigation, and we are reviewing all other cases dealt with by the former employee."

"When carrying out their duties, Inland Revenue employees must behave with the highest level of integrity in order to maintain the trust of the public," he said. "They also have to follow a strict Code of Conduct."

Mr Russell emphasised that Mr Song's actions were an exception.

"We have more than six thousand employees, with a strong record of public service and integrity. A recent survey of ethics in the public sector gave Inland Revenue employees high scores in all categories."

"I continue to have the greatest confidence in our employees," he said.
