Work out your tax code

Main income

Answer "Yes" or "No" to this question
Will this tax code be for your main source of income? Yes No

Definition

Your main source of income comes from the job that pays you the most. If you receive an income-tested benefit (other than New Zealand Superannuation) your tax code is automatically M. If you have two jobs that pay the same amount, you may choose either as your main source of income.

Example

Monica has a part-time job working 8 hours a week as a retail salesperson and has just started a new job as well working 30 hours a week as chef.

Monica needs to complete a Tax code declaration (IR330) for her new employer. Her job as a chef pays more than her part-time job, so this is her main source of income. Monica will answer "Yes" to this question.

Monica will also need to complete a new IR330 for her retail salesperson job, as this is no longer her main source of income. For this job she would answer "No" to this question.
