Māori organisations: How to cease being a Māori authority

Māori authority cessation

If you want to cease your organisation's Māori authority status or you no longer meet the criteria, you'll need to write to us. You may post the letter or use our online "Secure mail" service. In your correspondence, include all of the following information:

  • the date to cease the Māori authority election
  • whether or not the organisation will continue to exist and the entity it will be, eg company or trust.

We'll send an acknowledgement when we receive your letter.

Note
An organisation that ceases to be a Māori authority and then later elects back in is deemed to have disposed of and then reacquired all its assets at market value.
