Student loan repayments due 30 September

For overseas-based borrowers and those coming off repayment holidays

If you're based overseas and not on a repayment holiday you're required to make repayments in two equal instalments each year towards your student loan. These are due on 30 September and 31 March.

You can make your repayments either in a lump sum or by making smaller payments throughout the year, as long as the amount is paid in full by the payment dates above.

If you're in Australia or the UK you can use OrbitRemit, a free online money transfer service, to pay your student loan - it's fast, easy and secure.

Overseas-based borrowers coming off their repayment holiday

If you were overseas:

  • on or before 1 April 2007 and were entitled to a 3-year repayment holiday, your repayment break ended by 1 April 2010
  • before 1 April 2008 your repayment holiday ends on or before 31 March 2011
  • before 1 April 2009, your repayment holiday ends by 30 September 2012.

You're now required to make compulsory repayments to your student loan, and your payment is due 30 September 2011.

If you also had a payment due on 31 March 2011 or any date prior but missed that deadline, you must now make both the late payment and your September 2011 payments to minimise late payment penalties.

How much you'll need to pay

As an overseas-based borrower, your repayment obligation is based on your loan balance as at 1 April.

If your loan balance is... then the amount you owe for the year is...
less than $1,000 your whole loan balance.
$1,000 to $15,000 $1,000
$15,000.01 to $30,000 $2,000
more than $30,000 $3,000

You can check your up-to-date loan balance easily through our secure online services. You need to be registered for online services to do this.

Make sure you pay the correct amount to avoid penalties being charged to your account as this will increase your loan balance.

Even if you're on a repayment holiday, interest is still charged on your loan while you're overseas so it may be a good idea to make regular repayments.

If you're in Australia or the UK, you could make your repayments through OrbitRemit which offers free online money transfers for student loan repayments. You can also use your credit or debit card to make student loan repayments from anywhere overseas and you won't have to pay the convenience fee to do so.
