Overpayments and refunds

Find out what you can do if you've repaid more than you needed to for the tax year.

If you've repaid more than you needed to for the tax year, you can choose what to do with the overpayment. You can either:

  • leave it on your account
  • apply for a refund, or
  • use it to pay another tax bill.

Leave the overpayment on your account

You don't need to do anything. This will reduce your loan balance and the term of your loan. Use the student loan repayment calculator to see the effect of making additional repayments to your loan.

Apply for a refund

You'll need to apply for your refund within 6 months of receiving your end-of-year repayment calculation. You'll need to phone us - go to "Contact us" for details. If you're registered for online services, you can send us a secure email.

You'll get the refund either in your bank account, or by cheque, within 5 to 10 working days.

Pay another tax bill

If you have a student loan bill for another tax year, we can transfer your overpayment to:

  • that other tax year, or
  • other tax bills, for example income tax.

You'll get a statement from us confirming the transfer.
