Cambridge students scoop national award for tax knowledge
18 February 2005
Two students from Cambridge High School will next week be awarded the Inland Revenue prize for tax knowledge in Enterprise New Zealand’s financial literacy programme for 2004.
The 2004 award has been jointly won by Alison O'Connor and Mako Sobue, both from Cambridge High School. Mako has since returned to Japan, but Alison will receive her award at a presentation at the school next week.
"This is a significant achievement. Alison and Mako have done very well to attain this level of knowledge," said Kevin Moody, Service Centre Manager.
"Tax is an important factor in all of our lives as well as underpinning the wider economy. Gaining an understanding of how it works is essential for financial literacy. The Department sponsors this award because we want young people to be as aware as possible of their rights and responsibilities, as well as how the wider system works."
Alison and Mako will each receive a certificate of achievement and a cheque for $100. Because there were two winners, the annual award of $200 has been split between them.
Around 3,500 students and 100 schools are involved in the Enterprise NZ programme throughout New Zealand. Inland Revenue contributes a section on tax for the end-of-year exam, and sponsors an award for the top marks for questions in that section. Around a quarter of the schools involved sit the final exam.
