Incident at Upper Hutt Processing Centre
9 June 2005

Yesterday, Inland Revenue alerted Police and New Zealand Post to a threatening phone call to staff from a Napier man, which has turned out to be a false alarm.

The threat initially resulted in a mail plane flying between Napier and Wellington to be diverted to Palmerston North, where the mail, which had been en route to Inland Revenue's Upper Hutt Processing Centre, was checked by New Zealand Post and found to be safe.

Meanwhile, as a further precaution, Police secured a courier bag at the department's Upper Hutt Processing Centre this morning, which had originated in Napier. This mail was also found to be safe.

Inland Revenue Deputy Commissioner, Service Delivery, Naomi Ferguson, says on receiving the threat, Inland Revenue staff ensured safety procedures were initiated and Police were notified.

"Staff immediately implemented standard security procedures which have worked well ensuring the safety of our people," says Miss Ferguson.

"The usual precautionary measures were undertaken by the Police and have not delayed the day's processing of returns or payments at the processing centre," she says.

Miss Ferguson says that the incident has been a concern to Inland Revenue and the department will remain vigilant and take any threats to its staff very seriously.

Meanwhile, a man has been arrested by Police over the incident and is due to appear in court.
