Some seasonal workers entitled to tax refunds
5 July 2005
Some seasonal workers may be entitled to a tax refund, advises Inland Revenue.
Naomi Ferguson, Deputy Commissioner Service Delivery, says there are situations where taxpayers have overpaid tax during the year and may be able to receive a refund.
"This includes people who have worked in seasonal jobs, such as fruit picking, shearing and other casual agricultural work, and people who have used a secondary tax code and earned under $38,000. Salary and wage earners and self employed people earning under $9,880 may also be entitled to a refund," says Miss Ferguson.
"Using the personal tax summary calculator on our website www.ird.govt.nz is an easy way to check whether you could receive a refund, before you request a personal tax summary."
Alternatively, people can call Inland Revenue's automated telephone service on 0800 257 773 to request a personal tax worksheet. (Remember to have your IRD number handy.)
To find out more about personal tax summaries or to request one, visit our website at www.ird.govt.nz. Our website has recently been redesigned and is now more user-friendly than ever. As well as checking out the site's information, forms, and tools to calculate tax, people can also file their tax returns online.
Inland Revenue staff are also available at Heartlands service centres nationwide, providing information and advice about tax, student loan repayments, family assistance and child support.
Each month representatives from government agencies, including Inland Revenue, visit New Zealand's smaller communities as part of the Heartlands programme for provincial and rural New Zealanders.
You can find out where your nearest Heartlands service centre is by visiting www.heartlandservices.govt.nz or checking your local white pages.
For Otago media:
Central Otago also has a "Seasonal Solutions" centre in Alexandra, a joint initiative between various government agencies, including Inland Revenue. Seasonal Solutions can provide fruit pickers with all the information they need to know about their income tax obligations. Seasonal Solutions' office can be contacted on 03 440 2028.
