Salary and wage earners: are you entitled to a tax refund?
5 July 2005
Some salary or wage earners may be entitled to a tax refund, Inland Revenue is advising taxpayers.
"Most of us pay the correct amount of tax already, and don't need an end of year tax 'square-up'," says Naomi Ferguson, Deputy Commissioner Service Delivery.
"However, in certain situations, some people may be entitled to claim a tax refund."
You may be eligible for a refund if any of the following situations applied to you between 1 April 2004 and 31 March 2005:
- If you had more than one job during the year
- If you didn't work a full income year
- If you're able to claim one of the two low income rebates: the child rebate (for students aged under 19 with after-school jobs) or the rebate for those who received income less than $9,880
- If you received income less than $38,000 and received dividends from a company
- If you are able to deduct expenses from your income.
"Using the personal tax summary calculator on our website www.ird.govt.nz is an easy way to check whether you could receive a refund, before you ask for a personal tax summary," says Miss Ferguson.
Alternatively, people can call Inland Revenue's automated telephone service on 0800 257 773 to request a personal tax worksheet. (Remember to have your IRD number handy.)
To find out more about personal tax summaries or to request one, you can visit our website at www.ird.govt.nz. Our website has recently been redesigned and is now more user-friendly than ever. People can find information, forms, stationery and tax returns on our website and calculate their tax online.
