Refusing to cooperate with Inland Revenue lands couple in court
7 February 2007

An ex-Papamoa couple were found guilty and fined $750.00 each plus court costs in the Tauranga District Court today on one charge each of refusing to supply information to the tax department.

Shane Patrick McKenna, and Sonia Elizabeth Begley, both aged 37 and both formerly of Palm Springs, Papamoa, had pleaded not guilty to one charge each under the Tax Administration Act.  It is an offence to refuse to supply information to Inland Revenue when requested to do so.

In May last year the couple ignored written requests from Inland Revenue for information about the couple's tax affairs, and provided no explanation for their refusal.

"The tax system relies on self-reporting, honesty and compliance from taxpayers," said Stuart Duff, Inland Revenue's Manager Investigations, Hamilton.
