Late filers advised to contact Inland Revenue
3 October 2007
Customers who have not filed July 7 tax returns are urged to contact Inland Revenue or a tax agent, or visit Inland Revenue's website for further information.
Last month, reminder notices were sent to customers who do not have a tax agent and had not filed their IR3, IR4 or IR6 tax returns by the July 7 due date. Unless an extension of time has been arranged with Inland Revenue, these outstanding returns will incur late filing penalties.
If customers are unsure about whether or not they need to file a return, further information is available on the income tax section of Inland Revenue's website. These returns normally need to be filed by Maori authorities, trusts, partnerships and estates, as well as individuals with income other than salary and wages.
"We understand tax returns might not be filed with Inland Revenue for reasons beyond people's control, "said Bryre Patchell, Inland Revenue's Assistance Manager, Individuals.
"But anyone who finds themselves having difficulty getting their tax return filed should not delay any further, but rather contact Inland Revenue so we can work together to get the matter resolved."
To speak to someone about the options, customers can call Inland Revenue on 0800 377 771 as there may be arrangements which can be made to avoid recovery action. Inland Revenue's website www.ird.govt.nz also provides valuable advice about completing returns, filing returns online and paying tax debt.
