Former employee sentenced
29 October 2008

The Commissioner of Inland Revenue, Robert Russell, is pleased the case of a former employee convicted of corruption has been concluded, after he today admitted three further charges.

Alex Song, 32, a former junior investigator, admitted a charge of corruption last month. In the Wellington District Court today he also pleaded guilty to three charges under the Tax Administration Act 1994, of failing to maintain secrecy.

The charges related to Song's dealings with a taxpayer.

Song was sentenced to three months community detention and 200 hours community work.

Mr Russell said Inland Revenue employees must behave with the highest level of integrity to maintain the trust of the public.

"Our subsequent investigations have found no suggestion of other staff involvement, nor have we found any improper activity relating to other cases in which Mr Song was involved," he said.

"Our employees have an extremely strong and proud record of public service and integrity and I have the greatest of confidence in them."

Mr Russell thanked the NZ Police for their work on the case.
