Former Kaikohe farm manager jailed for tax evasion
12 November 2008
Inland Revenue has welcomed the jailing of a former Kaikohe farmer for cheating the tax system.
In the Hamilton District Court yesterday, Michael Peter Head was refused home detention and sentenced to 20 months jail.
Head was earlier found guilty of two charges of aiding and abetting his company, Heli-Rotor Helicopters Limited, to knowingly file two false GST returns in 2006 and 2007.
Investigation Team Leader Ken Beehre said: "Tax fraud makes it harder for honest business people to compete, and the sentence reflects the seriousness with which the courts regard this type of crime."
"Those who haven't been meeting their tax obligations should contact Inland Revenue to get their affairs in order as soon as possible."
In one GST period, Head obtained a fraudulent refund of $70,625 by including a fictitious purchase of a helicopter amounting to $635,625.00.
For a subsequent GST period, Inland Revenue stopped a further GST refund of $118,750 where Head had included another fictitious helicopter purchase of $1,068,740.00.
He created false documents in an attempt to defraud the Commissioner of Inland Revenue.
As Trustee of the Puketi Station Trust, Head was also found guilty of knowingly filing a false GST return in the Trust's name. He included a false claim for livestock purchases amounting to $196,000.00. This was another fictitious transaction.
