Tauranga court jails man for tax evasion
3 December 2008
A Mt Maunganui man convicted of tax evasion, after falsely registering workmates for GST, has been jailed for five months.
Walter Alexander Pascoe Perry was sentenced today at the Tauranga District Court after earlier admitting 13 charges of tax evasion.
Inland Revenue Manager Investigations, Stuart Duff, said tax fraud is a crime against all taxpayers and those who deliberately set out to defraud the system will be found out.
"We have specialist staff working on uncovering fraud and tax evasion. It is not a matter of if, but when fraudsters will be caught."
"Taxes are used to fund hospitals, schools and other government and community services. People trying to rip off the system are stealing from the community," said Mr Duff.
Perry worked as a labourer in the precast section of a civil engineering company.
In January this year, Inland Revenue received two GST registrations over the internet in the names of fellow employees. Inquiries found the bank account listed in both registrations belonged to Perry, and the PO Box detailed was owned by an associate.
The following month, Inland Revenue received a further eleven GST registrations over the internet in the names of other employees from the precast section. On this occasion, the PO Box and bank account used both belonged to Perry's associate.
Employees in the precast section were interviewed, and all confirmed they had not registered for GST.
Perry's offending was detected before any claims could be made under the false registrations.
