Last day for tax returns fast approaching
9 June 2009

Inland Revenue is reminding people that many income tax returns for the 2008-09 year must be filed by 7 July 2009.

All people and organisations earning business income are required to file a tax return every year.

The 7 July deadline applies mainly to businesses with a financial year that ends on 31 March. Others with a different financial year may have another due date, while an extension of time can also apply to those with a tax agent.

Inland Revenue Group Manager Assistance, Charles Ronaldson, said most people get their returns in on time.

"If you are having difficulties, you can contact a tax agent. They will help you claim your full entitlements. Accounting fees are generally a deductible expense, and you will probably qualify for an extension of time to file your return."

Mr Ronaldson said in the current economic climate, some people may be reluctant to file their returns due to cash flow problems.

"However, you still need to file your return, even if you can't pay the tax straight away," said Mr Ronaldson.

"Remember, the normal due date for end-of-year tax is 7 February. If you draw up a budget and put money aside regularly, you may be able to pay on time after all. But if you can't, contact us as soon as possible and we will do everything we can to help. You could qualify for an instalment arrangement."

An instalment arrangement can save money because no incremental (monthly) penalties are charged if the taxpayer keeps up with the terms of the agreement.
