Online service makes tax refunds easier
28 July 2009
Salary and wage earners can now confirm their 2009 personal tax summary online and get their tax refund more quickly.
"The enhancements to Inland Revenue’s online services mean customers can handle their tax affairs in their own time and makes claiming a tax refund even easier," said Inland Revenue Group Manager Assistance, Charles Ronaldson.
Up until now, people due refunds of more than $200 had to confirm their personal tax summaries by ringing Inland Revenue, before the money was paid.
Personal tax summaries are the last step in claiming a tax refund directly from Inland Revenue. Customers can use Inland Revenue’s online calculator to see whether they are due a refund, or owe tax, for a particular year. They can then choose whether or not to contact Inland Revenue to confirm their income details and request a personal tax summary.
If a refund is less than $200 it is automatically sent to the customer, but until now customers have had to ring to confirm the accuracy of their personal tax summary before receiving larger payments."Now they can go to the website and do this step online," Mr Ronaldson said.
When they’re confirming their personal tax summary, people can also update their bank account details.
"Last year, we sent out close to one million personal tax summaries," Mr Ronaldson said. "Using our online services will mean people will see a reduction in the amount of mail they receive from us in the future."
The ability to confirm a personal tax summary online builds on Inland Revenue’s existing online services. Taxpayers can also:
- View account balances and payments such as a student loan balance or Working for Families Tax Credits payments received.
- Update their details if they are Working for Families Tax Credits customers.
- Ask questions about their account through a secure email.
Customers wanting to use Inland Revenue’s online services need to register first. They can find out more at www.ird.govt.nz/myir.
