Tsunami donations tax credits
2 October 2009
Many people making donations for tsunami relief could be eligible for a tax credit.
The Commissioner of Inland Revenue, Robert Russell, said many New Zealanders want to help their neighbours in the Pacific hit by this week's disaster.
"We understand most people's immediate response is to make a donation to help out, particularly with so many having family and friends in the affected areas."
"We simply want to assist by making sure they're aware of the process for applying for a tax credit," said Mr Russell.
Changes over the past year mean the old $630 maximum claim amount has been removed. People can now claim a third of what they're donating, up to their annual taxable income.
Mr Russell said companies are now also able to claim greater amounts for donations than they were able to in the past.
People can claim a tax credit if they give $5 or more during the year to an approved charity. Receipts are required.
A list of those charities and further information about tax credits is available at www.ird.govt.nz.
