Personal tax summary calculation for 2008

About this calculator

Use this calculator to check if you've paid the correct amount of tax, or whether you'd have a refund or tax to pay.

Use of this tool does not result in data being submitted to us.

When to use this calculator

Find out whether you'll automatically be sent a personal tax summary or whether you must request one. If you request a personal tax summary and it works out to a tax bill, you have to pay that bill.

If you want to find out if you'll get a tax refund or bill, use this calculator.

The information you enter in this calculator is not monitored or stored by us in any way. You can enter a name and/or reference number if you want them to appear on a printed copy of your results page - but this is entirely optional.

The calculation above is as accurate as the information you enter. But please be aware that if you leave out some income or claim a rebate when you’re not entitled to it, then the result calculated will be wrong.

What you will need

You'll need the following information with you when using this service:

  • your income details for the year. You can get these from:
    • our Look at account information service under "Get it done online"
    • your summary of earnings
    • your year end pay slip(s)
  • any interest, dividend or taxable Maori authority distribution details
  • whether you're entitled to one of the low income rebates
  • details of any expenses you can claim.

If you're using income information from your pay slip(s), you'll need to calculate your ACC earners' levy and deduct if from your total PAYE deductions. However, not all income is liable for earners' levy. There's a list of income not liable for the levy and a worksheet included within the calculator to help you work it out.

After you finish

If the result of your calculation is a refund, you'll need to request a personal tax summary. Requests of personal tax summaries for the 2008 tax year will arrive by late July.

If the result of your calculation is tax to pay, you don't need to do anything.

You may wish to print and keep a copy of this worksheet for your personal records.

No information you provide while using the calculator is recorded, saved or in any way referenced by Inland Revenue. The calculator is stored on a secure part of our website to prevent unauthorised interception. If you are unable to access the calculator, you may need to update your browser and/or firewall settings.
