When to contact Child Support

There are many reasons for getting in touch with Child Support. If you are a custodian or a paying parent, it is very important to let us know if any of the following changes occur. These changes will affect the amount of child support you receive or pay.

When should the custodian contact Child Support?

The custodian is the person who looks after the child (for example, a parent, aunt, uncle, grandparent or legal guardian). If you are the custodian, please complete and send the Child
Support change of circumstances (IR116)
form or you can complete this online in the get it done online section of our site or contact us in any of these circumstances:

  • you start or stop looking after a child (or children)
  • your personal details - address and/or phone number - change
  • you reconcile with the paying parent
  • you start or stop receiving a benefit from Work and Income NZ
  • one or more of your children no longer qualifies for child support
  • your arrangements for shared care start or finish.

When should the paying parent contact Child Support?

The paying parent is not living with their child and must pay a set amount of money to support the child (or children) financially. If you are the paying parent, please complete and send the change of circumstance form online or contact us in any of these circumstances:

  • you start or stop looking after a child (or children)
  • your personal details - address and/or phone number - change
  • a child no longer qualifies to be included in a living allowance
  • a child is no longer living with the custodian
  • your income changes
  • your employment changes.

Note: If your circumstances change you must tell Child Support, even if you have already advised Work and Income NZ of the change.
