For individuals & families: Travelling to and from New Zealand

People leaving New Zealand who receive portable superannuation or Veteran's Pension

If you receive portable superannuation or Veteran's Pension (with no tax deducted):

  • while travelling overseas for more than 26 weeks, but
  • not living in an overseas country

you'll have to pay New Zealand tax on the payments you receive.

You'll need to file an Individual tax return (IR3) as you have received income that has not been taxed at source. You may also need to make provisional tax payments. This income should be included in the "overseas income" box in the return as this includes income received while overseas.

If you don't receive an IR3 return please phone and ask us to send you one - see "Contact us" for our details.
