Minister's foreword
Minister's introduction to the Statement of Intent.
Inland Revenue's traditional role of collecting tax revenue is central to the functioning of government. The department collects 85% of the revenue needed to fund government expenditure.
In recent years, Inland Revenue has also been asked to take on the role, sometimes shared, of administering a number of important social policy measures - such as child support, student loans, paid parental leave, family assistance and Working for Families. The new KiwiSaver scheme, when it is enacted, is expected to add significantly to that list. It is to Inland Revenue's credit that it has been able to respond effectively to these administrative challenges.
A sound tax system and well-administered social policies are undoubtedly vital to supporting the government's stated priorities for the next decade: to progress New Zealand's economic transformation to a high-income, knowledge-based market economy, and enable families to have the support and choices they need to be secure and reach their full potential within our knowledge-based economy.
I am pleased to present Inland Revenue's Statement of Intent, which sets out the department's plans for helping the government to meet its economic and social policy goals, and is consistent with the government's policies and performance expectations.
Hon Peter Dunne
Minister of Revenue
