Who can have a password?
Only individuals (for example, self-employed people or salary or wage earners) can have a password. We can't set up a password for non-individual taxpayers, such as companies.
What can the password be?
The password can be anything you like with between four and ten characters, which can be letters, numbers, or a combination. We recommend that you don't use anything too obvious, such as "taxes" or the name of a relative or pet. Don't use something like a bank PIN number because this may breach your agreement with the bank that you will not reveal your number.
Keeping your password secret
If you have a password, it's important that you keep it secret. Don't write it down with your other tax records, and don't reveal it to other people, including:
- your tax agent (if you have one), or
- any nominated person who is authorised to deal with your tax affairs.
If someone else phones us with your password, claiming to be you, they could find out about your tax affairs. If your password is accidentally revealed to another person, contact us immediately to change it.
