Resident withholding tax - what it is and why we have it
Resident withholding tax is deducted from investment income before the investor receives it. Generally, resident passive income (formerly resident withholding income) is interest paid on money lent, and dividends paid on company shares.
See the following guides and forms for more information:
- Resident withholding tax (RWT) on interest - payer's guide (IR283) - information about resident withholding tax (RWT) for people and organisations who pay interest
- Resident withholding tax on dividends (IR284) - a guide for companies, telling them how to deduct resident withholding tax (RWT) from the dividends they pay to their shareholders
- Resident withholding tax - interest payer registration (IR450) - for interest payers to register to pay RWT. You can "Get it done online" or download and print a PDF form.
- Application for exemption from resident withholding tax on interest and dividends (IR451) - an application for a certificate of exemption from RWT. Who may qualify for an exemption is also explained.
Every three months we produce a list of IRD numbers for cancelled and reissued Resident withholding tax (RWT) exemption certificates.
