Pay off your loan in full

Find out how to repay your student loan in full.

If you decide to repay your entire student loan you can get an up-to-date loan balance by either:

  • checking it online. Go to "Get it done online", or
  • requesting a student loan statement. Go to "Get it done online", or
  • calling our 0800 self-service line on 0800 257 777. Remember to have your IRD number handy.

Once you have your loan balance you're ready to make your final repayment.

Voluntary repayment bonus

You may be eligible for the voluntary repayment bonus.

If you are eligible, you can choose to either ... and ...

repay your full loan balance, or

receive your voluntary repayment bonus as a refund.

pay 10/11 of your loan balance

as long as you're up-to-date with your repayment obligations, this should cover your full loan balance once the voluntary repayment bonus has been applied.

As with making any financial decisions, you're advised to get appropriate financial advice before taking advantage of the voluntary repayment bonus.

If you make your final payment within 30 days of getting your loan balance

If you're not eligible for an interest-free student loan, you won't be charged any more interest.

If you've taken out another loan with StudyLink this year

The loan balance we hold won't include this loan so you'll need to contact Studylink separately to find out your total balance.

Once you've repaid your loan

If you've repaid your loan by paying 10/11ths of your loan balance please call us on 0800 377 778. We'll check your balance to ensure your loan is repaid and advise what you need to do next.

If you've paid you're loan in full you'll get a final statement from us letting you know that we've received your repayment and we have closed your loan account. You'll need to make sure you've cancelled any automatic payments you have set up. If you're making repayments through your salary or wage, you'll need to give your employer a new tax code. See our decision tree to work out your tax code.
